There’s something mystifying about mature trees. They tower over us, seeming to offer a sense of security and protection. They offer homes to animals, shade to houses, and beautify our homes and landscapes. Trees clean our air and provide vital oxygen to our environment.
So now you want to plant a tree, but where do you start? First, head on over to Sunrise this spring and our experts will help you find the perfect container-grown tree for your location and desires. We are happy to help you choose from our vast variety. Our list for 2021 can be found on our website here.
To plant your new tree, first be sure to select a location where the tree has ample room to grow and can thrive for years to come. Next, dig your hole just as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. Carefully remove the tree from the container. Gently and shallowly cut the outer roots to encourage them to spread out in their new soil. Then place the tree into your hole.
Trees benefit from healthy soil at planting. We highly recommend mixing Bumper Crop with your current soil as you fill in the rest of your hole. Bumper Crop is full of organic material that all trees and plants love. If you’re investing in a tree, you want to give it a firm and healthy foundation so it is absolutely worth it!
For newly planted trees, be sure to water thoroughly so all the roots are able to soak up the water. A five gallon bucket is a good place to start, but how often you apply will vary by weather. A good rule of thumb is to water when the soil is dry an inch below the soil. Fertilizer is typically not needed the first year.
